Ek Purani Bat Hai/Once Upon A Time
Embroidered shawl and tractor cart with sound piece the village of Gelawas, India 2011/2012.
When participating at Sowing Seeds – and international artist camp in the village of Gelawas, India – I collected local stories that had survived through the oral tradition of storytelling. I wanted to preserve or document them for the future, as the village culture is changing rapidly at the moment, and many of the people who knew the stories were illiterate.
Through the content of the stories, I selected everyday objects that I could write on, like a tractor car and a shawl. Such items are normally ornamentally decorated, and I used the same tecniques to apply the texts. In addition I had recorded many stories on my mobile phone. These where made into a sound piece that was put inside the tool box under the tractor car for people to listen to on the day of the exhibition.
